Your Direct Path to Law Enforcement

FCPD is an approved DoD SkillBridge provider and operates the largest law enforcement SkillBridge program on the East Coast. Participants can attend the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy during their transition from military service, giving them a head start on their law enforcement career.

Application Process

The application process ensures candidates are prepared to succeed in the academy and in the profession.

To participate in the FCPD SkillBridge Program:

  • You must be within 180 days of military separation before the program start date.
  • You must meet all Fairfax County Police Department hiring standards.
  • You must successfully complete the required hiring and academy preparation steps.

 

Applicants are encouraged to begin the process 6–8 months before their separation date.

5. Program Questionnaire

Complete the FCPD SkillBridge Program Questionnaire.

Notify your military command of your intent to participate

7. Background Investigation

Pass your background investigation.

8. Psychological Evaluation

Pass your psychological evaluation.

9. Medical Examination

Pass your medical examination.

10. Authorization Form

Command Authorization Form (CAF) completed by your command.

11. Time to Begin

Where is the training held?
  • Training takes place at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy in Chantilly, Virginia.
What are the training hours?
  • Academy training typically runs Monday–Friday, 0700–1500 hours, with some training objectives requiring evening hours.
Is FCPD reserve friendly?
  • Yes. Fairfax County Police Department proudly supports military reservists and offers paid military leave.
When do I receive pay and benefits from FCPD?
  • After completing the SkillBridge program and transitioning to FCPD employment, recruits receive full pay and benefits for the remainder of academy training.
